Through the ages online
|
I'd love to play Through the Ages online.
I have used the Vassal version from about 6 months ago, and it works ok. (A newer version was recently released that I haven't tried yet.) If you are one who expects perfection and everything to flow smoothly - this is NOT the way to play for you. Expect a lot of fumbling around as you figure out how the module works, and I believe there are still some bugs.
Specifically, the module automates some things but not others, and you have to watch carefully to make sure it's doing what you expect it to.

Brass Online?

Anyone interested in Brass online? I just got started on this site (yes, I know it's been around awhile) and it appears to run very well.

2nd Saturday gaming, welcome to 2010!

I read through the rules online, but MAN the placement rules sound atrocious. We'll have to decide how those work (an official ruling has yet to come out - see this thread http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/459503/water-rules-)

Through the ages online

Ok, I've downloaded the latest Vassal version and TTA module, and it works the same as I remember it. Shall we attempt to get a game going? Replies on this thread so far are from
Nate John Kevin Rob (Epworthian)
please email me at rpf1 AT mindspring.com to confirm.
In the meantime, download the latest version of Vassal (3.1.13) from the Vassal website. http://www.vassalengine.org/
Also download the latest TTA module (2.48) http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/468261/vassal-mod-2-48-available (follow the link to the fileshare website)
If you are unfamiliar with Vassal I can try and give some tips.

I went through a couple of turns last night and, man, is that thing unintuitive. Got stuck on how to execute/pass on a political action. Bottom line is that someone will probablyneed to talk me through the first turn or two on the phone, just so I don't make any mistakes. Other than that, I should be fine.
Yeah, it is NOT smooth. But it works adequately once you get used to it. There are two other methods of playing (Cyberboard and Sun Tzu) but from what I hear you have to do everything manually (including dealing cards and upkeep).
This at least automates some of it to make it a little faster. The trick is internalizing what is automated and what isn't. That takes a couple of tries.

Ill be there. Do I have to read Rise of Empires Rules before hand? That sounds like Homework.
I'm pretty sure I will be there, and if so I can teach. I'm not sure I actually LIKE it , though.... TTA is just better.
I'm also on a real Brass kick if I can convince anyone else to play.

Through the Ages Report on BGG

Thanks for the report. It was all I could do to apply my meager brain cells to our own game, I didn't even notice what was going on over there.

Thanks for providing that link, Kevin.
Rob, I understand you lost a squeaker to Aaron because you didn't realize in time that you could have built two Age III wonders. That's more than enough reason for missing what was going on around you. Incidentally, if you had pulled it out with a second Age III wonder, I think that would've been a report-worthy game itself. I haven't seen anyone do that yet.
Aaron had a well deserved win, successfully negotiating between military problems and card problems and two grouchy opponents (I need to stop playing so late). I was so tired, I actually missed 4 points because one of my colonies was off to the side and I forgot to count it.
Two wonders is quite doable with either lots (4+) coal, or Tesla. I think my mistake was in actually grabbing Tesla, it was too late to really help. Newton was doing just fine.

BSG game situation
|
This might interest those who like BSG. I'm in the middle of a second PBEM game with some of my college friends. Here is the situation:
Turn order: Tigh (revealed Cylon) Starbuck (president, admiral, played by me) Zarek (revealed Cylon) Tyrol - current player Roslin
Fuel: 1 Food: 1 Morale: 2 Population: 2
Distance: 8, Jump track at Blue -3. 1 raptor remaining. 1 centrurion on board at the beginning of the boarding track. Zarek has just played Tactical Assault, so 2 raider activations will result in more pop loss. And, of course, with one basestar, there's about an 8% chance of the FTL being hit should it get activated.
Humans have a 50/50 shot by jumping immediately (with a Strategic Planning card play), but I'm trying to convince them that we can improve that with some scouting, but then again I don't know what cards have been buried by Roslin and the active cylons. We've only seen 3 cylon attacks the whole game and we're nearing the end of the deck..... we shall see.

Recipe for Giant Chocolate-Toffee Cookies
|
Originally from Bon Appetit July 2000 magazine, with my slight modifications.
1/2 cup all purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 pound bittersweet (not unsweetened) or semisweet chocolate, chopped 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter 1-3/4 cups (packed) brown sugar 4 large eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract About 7-8 ounces of chocolate covered English toffee bars (such as Heath), coarsely chopped (if you are lucky, you can find this in pre-chopped packages in baking aisle) 1 cup walnuts, toasted, chopped (I always delete this. I don't like nuts in cookies)
1) Stir chocolate and butter in top of double boiler set over simmering water until melted and smooth. Remove from over water. Cool mixture to lukewarm (you don't really need to chop up the chocolate if it's already in the 1 ounce squares).
2) Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a small bowl; whisk to blend.
3) Using electric mixer, beat sugar and eggs in large mixing bowl until thick, about 5 minutes.
4) Pour chocolate / butter mixture in with the eggs / sugar. Add vanilla and mix thoroughly.
5) Add flour mixture, then toffee (and nuts). Stir thoroughly.
6) Chill batter in fridge until firm, about 45 minutes.
7) Preheat oven to 350 F. Line 2-3 baking sheets with parchment or waxed paper. Drop batter by 1/4 cupfuls onto sheets, spacing 2.5 inches apart.
8) Bake just until tops are dry and cracked but cookies are still soft to touch (about 15 minutes). Cool on sheets. Makes about 18 (you can make them smaller for a larger quantity)
