Our friend and fellow gamer Doug Hoylman passed away on November 2nd of a heart attack. Doug was unfailingly a pleasure to be around and he'll be missed.

In addition to being a board gamers, Doug was very well known and a frequent champion in the crossword scene:

Memorial service site:

Thanks to Bob Jones via Rick B, who shared the memorial information below.

Memorial information:
The memorial for Doug Hoylman will be next Tuesday, November 17, from 7:15PM to 9PM in the rental room at his condominium. Although he'll be heading back to Montana before then, Doug's brother, Rick, has generously paid for the room. There will be some refreshments.

The Willoughby
4515 Willard Ave.
Chevy Chase

There won't be a formal ceremony, but there will be an opportunity to speak and share memories of Doug. And if a game or two happens to break out, I'm sure Doug would have appreciated it. :-)

The website for the building is here: http://www.thewilloughbychevychase.com/

Directions are here: http://www.thewilloughbychevychase.com/directions/

There is limited guest parking available in the building, but there are a couple of nearby parking garages. Also, the building is within a reasonable walking distance from the Friendship Heights metro station.

An update from Ethan Goffman via Bob Jones:

---START---

Hello Everyone,

Geico has graciously agreed to allow free parking for Doug’s memorial. You will need to go to the West Lot of the Geico building, just across from the Willoughby, where the memorial will be held. Yes, there is such a thing as Free Parking! (and you don’t have to play Monopoly to land there.)

I did sign a form that excuses Geico from all liability for anything that might happen in their parking garage (such as damage to a car).

Reminder, The Willoughby is at 4515 Willard Ave., Chevy Chase. (This is the south entrance—don’t go to the north entrance by mistake. The Memorial starts at 7:15 PM, Tuesday (come at 7 if you want to help set up).

Besides sharing memories of Doug, you can also read something that you feel appropriate. Doug wasn’t religious, but I think anything from the Bible to the Koran to Richard Dawson to Shakespeare could work.

For those who are coming by Metro, you need to get off at Friendship Heights. Go to the Western exit—at the top of the escalator, go out the Wisconsin and Western exit (2nd from left). Turn left, walk a half block to Willard Avenue, turn left, walk two blocks, and the building will be on the right side of the street—the tall building that dominates all the wimpy little buildings around it.

I will see many of you on Tuesday!

Ethan

I have not heard anything. I plan to be in pants and a collared shirt (I know, crazy right? It's not even winter yet!) but no suit and tie.

The organization that Doug volunteered with was The Learning Ally.

They have a link for donations for those who might like to honor Doug by donating (or volunteering).
