5th Saturday Gaming - 2/29/20 10am in Herndon, VA Come celebrate the first ever hosting of 5th Saturday Gaming in February, and the last time I'll be the official host after nearly 16 years. I'll be handing the meeple over to Mike & Salle Gibbs who will continue hosting as their travel/running schedules permit. Despite it being the middle of tax season, I want to go out with a bang so we're opening the doors at 10am instead of the usual 1pm (of course, no problem if you want to arrive later). We are planning to have a sandwich platter for lunch and catered BBQ from Mission BBQ for dinner.

The address is:

12828 Fantasia Dr., Herndon, VA 20170

Ample street parking is available. There are two dogs in residence.

Let me know if you're able to make it so I can plan food accordingly, the more the merrier!

5th Saturday gaming goes virtual! I thought we might try something virtual this Saturday. I've set up a server on Discord which we can use to chat (text and/or voice) and then break into rooms to play board games online using platforms such as Steam, yucata.de, BoardGameArena.com or boiteajeux.net.

If you already have an account on Discord and some or all of the other online sites, show up (virtually) around 1pm EDT or later to start gaming.

If you do NOT have accounts on Discord, etc. show up between noon and 12:30pm EDT so we can get the administrative stuff out of the way and be ready to play games by 1pm.

To join the Discord server I've set up an open invitation which I will keep open until some time next week. Follow this link:

https://discord.gg/mFwefQb

This will also allow you to create an account on Discord if you don't already have one.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Rick

Virtual BGG Con @Home I noticed that BGG Con @Home starts today. They're using tabletop.events and Discord for infrastructure. Most scheduled games seem to be on TableTop Simulator or Tabletopia, but a few are on BGA and yucata.

I learned Bonfire on Tabletopia earlier today. Didn't much care for Tabletopia which may have soured Bonfire a bit for me. It was like learning a new game while recovering from a stroke. A lot of my "learning" capacity was soaked up learning how to pick things up, flip them over, spin them around, etc. with lots of zooming in and out (trying to read and decipher tiny symbols on cards and tiles).

Admission is $10, free if you signed up for BGG Con (which was cancelled), or free if you volunteer to host a game. Open gaming seemed practically non-existent today but that's not exactly unexpected for mid-day on a Wednesday.

I'm hosting Roll for the Galaxy at noon tomorrow (Thursday) and will be around off-and-on through Sunday (have some errands to run on Saturday morning though).

Best day of the week I learned a few new (to me) games at BGG Con @Home. Mostly light filler stuff like Kingdomino, Chakra and Flaming Pyramids. I also learned Rajas of the Ganges: The Dice Game which was a little meatier. I played with 5 though which I do NOT recommend. There was way too much down time between turns.

I also learned The Crew which is a co-op trick-taking game with 3-5 players.

In addition to various games on BGA and yucata, I also got in a game of Concordia on boiteajeux.net. The interface was pretty decent, felt more like yucata and less like BGA. Not sure if it was a browser thing or just a glitch but in Firefox it would not alert me when it was my turn. Fortunately I was in a voice channel on Discord so my opponent could tell me when they were done and it was easy enough to refresh.

Cheryl started a new job a couple weeks ago so we're just sort of taking things one day at a time. I *think* I will be around on Saturday but not entirely sure at this point. She has to work on Thursday so if anyone else is around Thursday before 7pm and wants to game, let me know (although that should probably be a different thread!)

Ho Ho Ho -it’s fourth Saturday I might be up for something. Does anyone have games on Steam? I got a couple more for Xmas: Wingspan and a Ticket to Ride bundle. I also have Terraforming Mars which I've been told is actually multi-platform since the multi-playerness is handled via Asmodee servers instead of Steam servers. So if you have TM for IOS and I have TM on Steam we might be able to play together (haven't tried it yet though).

New Years Eve virtual gaming? I think Cheryl and I are in, maybe 7:15ish depending on when she gets off work.

Virtual 5th Saturday coming up FYI we're doing Virtual 5th Saturday this coming weekend starting around 1pm. Not sure if anyone will show up, we were able to play a few games in October (but had to cut it short since it was Halloween).

To join the Discord server I've set up an open invitation. Follow this link:

https://discord.gg/mFwefQb

I also have an email list at groups.io which I think you can subscribe to here:

The Crew on BGA I won't be able to make 4th Saturday (virtual) gaming this weekend. Anyone available and want to play The Crew on BoardGameArena either tonight or tomorrow night?
If you don't know it, it's a mission-based cooperative trick-taking card game that plays 3-5 players. It's easy to learn (especially if you've ever played any trick taking games like Bridge, Hearts, Spades, etc.) and I can teach.

2nd Saturday of June This has been blocked off on my calendar for several weeks now and I'm thrilled that you are able to host! Count me in for gaming and I'll try to talk Cheryl into coming for at least part of the day too.

Dog days of gaming? August 14th JohnKerr wrote:
Clearly it's too hot for doing anything outside. Conserve your cool by coming by for 2nd Saturday gaming!

August 14th! Starting at 1! Who is coming?

I think we're going to skip mowing the lawn this weekend so Cheryl and I are up for a game or two before dinner.

I can bring It's a Wonderful World again (still haven't played with the normal start side) and also Wingspan with the European expansion. I can also bring Concordia if anyone's interested (but let me know ahead of time, it's in two heavy boxes with all of the expansion maps).

November 13th, 2nd saturday gaming! If all goes well, Jeff and I will be playing MegaCiv tomorrow in Manassas.

I hope to be around for 4th Saturday gaming (if that's happening this month) and would also be up for gaming on 4th Friday if anyone else is interested (either in person or via Discord and BGA/Yucata/Steam/etc.)

Giving thanks for gaming, 11/27 Not sure about Cheryl yet but I expect to be there shortly before 1pm. I'm hoping she will be up for at least an early game but she has a family function in the evening.

The newest things I have are Castles of Tuscany, Bonfire, Mariposas, The Crew 2, and Lost Cities Roll & Write. At the pace the hobby is going (or perhaps the much slower pace my life is going these days) I figure if the game is one I already know AND already have a copy of, it can't possibly be considered "new"! Still, LMK if anyone wants me to bring any of those.

I'd be up for learning at least one new game. I've been told I would like Lost Ruins of Arnak (so I watched a video, looks interesting). John's write up of Nidavellir sounded interesting right up until the word "bid" (I don't generally like auction games unless they're structured auctions like in Princes of Florence). I'd give it a try if it's not too auction heavy.

Rick, why don't you bring the Lost Cities Roll & Move, if you don't mind? I've heard good things about it and it could make a very nice opener.

For a 2p I'd still rather play the original (2p Roll & Write you end up in all 6 expeditions). I've only played with 3+ a couple times and there are more interesting decisions about which expeditions to start/advance with more players. Happy to bring & teach.

My online gaming buddies are very enthusiastic about The Crew 2 and view it as an improvement on the original. OTOH, I haven't played all the hands in the first game, so unless there are folks who have and want to try something a little more challenging, I'm happy playing just the first Crew game.

I'm generally of the opinion that once you've played 2 you never need to go back to the original. The exception possibly being if I can get some of Cheryl's non-gaming family to play later today it will be Crew 1. Conveniently they both fit in the original box and the extra red/green communication tokens work really well in other games (i.e. Terraforming Mars) to signal "I've passed".

I'm "possible" and would probably be a late arrival. Any of the games mentioned is fine with me. I'll bring Beyond the Sun if I come... just in case. Have a great Thanksgiving. I'm thankful for the games, but especially the gamers.
Chris

I've also heard good things about Beyond the Sun. Maybe I'll look for a good video on BGG so I at least have a basic understanding of the game.

Holiday (Virtual?) Gaming I could be up for something on 12/25. Cheryl is working an 8-6 shift at the animal hospital (she got Thanksgiving off so she agreed to work Christmas).

I'd need a Gaia Project refresher but I'm sure I can find a video somewhere. BGG says I played it once in 2018. IIRC it's Terra Mystica in Space, right? (Not that it helps, I haven't played TM since 2015 and 4 of my 5 plays were in 2013).

4th Saturday gaming? I think I'm in. Cheryl is picking up a 13h shift so I'm on doggie dinner duty around 6pm but hopefully I can get a couple games in.

May 14 - gaming cancelled I can hop on Discord tomorrow at 1pm.

I have the Wingspan Europe expansion (everyone needs to own Wingspan on Steam but only the host needs to own the expansion on Steam for everyone to play it). I also saw that the Hellas/Elysium expansion was just released for Terraforming Mars but I have not bought it yet. I believe they have the same policy, only the game host needs to own the expansions for everyone to play. I've heard that TM is platform independent since it goes through the Asmodee servers so Steam client can play vs. IOS App (but the friending is quirky and has to happen on asmodee.net first).

I've also recently learned Isle of Cats and can teach it on BGA if folks are interested in that. I need to teach Cheryl at some point anyway, so why not tomorrow!

I haven't found a critical mass of folks to play Uptown on BGA yet, a great short-ish game if folks are up for it. I see they also have Great Western Trail but I haven't played it online yet (and might need a refresher).

June 11th - gaming cancelled again I'm, at best, a solid maybe for tomorrow. We had "early" dinner plans but one of the two people we were supposed to meet for dinner has COVID. So now we have "later" dinner plans with different folks, so if enough people show up on Discord for gaming, I still need to be done by 5:30 at the latest. Should be able to get in either one new-to-me game (with teaching) or maybe two games I already know how to play.

I've been itching to try BGA's implementation of Uptown but haven't had enough people to make it worthwhile. I like it best with 5 but 4 is okay.

I've also heard good things about 7 Wonders Architects but haven't played or learned the rules yet.

I think we played Parks a while back, I'd try that again.

Games for sale - claim by 7pm EDT Wednesday Here are games I'm planning on putting into the Congress of Gamers auction this coming weekend. If you're interested, let me know and I'll pull them out of the stack for you! Feel free to ignore the listed prices and just make an offer. Sorry for the wonky copy/paste, I've also attached a screen snip in case that's easier to read.
